How to Make Batik Tulis

The tools needed for the process of making Batik Tulis:

  1. Canting, a tool for making batik, these tools are usually made of copper where the edges resembles or is similar to a bird’s beak.

  2. Gawangan, a place to put down or put a fabric that will be batik motifs. Gawangan is usually made of wood or bamboo.

  3. Frying pan, has a small size that is used to melt the wax or malam. These pans are made of clay or bronze.

  4. Small stove or brazier, used for such a small skillet heat.

  5. Wax or malam, made from a mixture of various types of materials such as leaves gondorukem, paraffin, fat and coconut oil.

  6. Dyes with artificial chemical dyes.

The process of making Batik Tulis :

  1. Ngukur, or in english is measure, this process is to measure how much fabric we need for the process of making batik tulis.

  2. memola, is the process of making a pattern or trace on the fabric in a way that has been modeled on the pattern motifs, or are often said to ngeblat. Batik patterns or motifs are usually made on parchment paper first, then traced according to the pattern on the fabric. In this process we can trace or modeled directly on fabric using a pencil or canting.

  3. Mbathik, is the process of incised wax batik fabric on top, beginning with drawing the lines outside pattern.

  1. Nolet, is the process of colouring the patterns that we desired, we must be carefull on this process or the colour would mbleber (outside the pattern)

  1. Nembok, namely the process of covering the parts that are not allowed to hit the basic color in the fabric

  1. Next is ngepuur, ngepuur is colouring the background, we use black colour or dark colour for ngepuur

  2. Rinse the wax, the next part of making batik tulis is rinse the wax by dip it in the boiled water on the stove

  3. mbathik again, after the fabric is clean and dry you can draw it again with wax. The purpose is to maintain the first and second colour

  4. nglorot, is the process of boiling the fabric to rinse the wax. the purpose is so we can see the pattern

  5. Washing the fabric to clean it from all of the dirt

  6. Dry it under the roof
